Jason Momoa has played some morally questionable characters over the years, but we usually see him in heroic roles. Well, the guy who’s played the big screen version of Aquaman for the last six years is leaving the side of the angels for at least a little while. In a new interview, Momoa reveals that not only will he be playing a bad guy, but he will apparently be playing the villain of the upcoming blockbuster Fast & Furious 10.
The Aquaman star was on the red carpet for The Batman when Entertainment Tonight stopped him to ask a few questions. Among other things, he was asked about what other work he has coming up. The first thing Jason Momoa mentions is Fast & Furious 10, and perhaps unintentionally reveals what had only been a rumor up until now — that he’ll be the villain of the film. “It’s fun, I get to play the bad guy, which I haven’t gotten to do for a while,” Momoa pointed out. “Now, I get to be the bad boy. A very flamboyant bad boy. A little panache!” He delivers the “flamboyant” bit with a comic fling of his hair.
So the good news is we get to see Jason Momoa in the kind of role he rarely gets to play which is kind of standard operating procedure for the Fast franchise. It’s known for taking big name actors known for more heroic roles like John Cena and Idris Elba and turning them into antagonists. The bad news, of course, is that unless he switches sides before the end, Momoa’s character won’t be part of Dominic Toretto’s oft-mentioned “Family.”
After talking about Fast & Furious 10, Momoa attempts to be coy about his first project to follow the blockbuster, but he may have given away the goods anyway. “After that,” Jason Momoa says, “Something really big. Going back to Hawaii. Going back to the homeland. So hopefully that all works out.” Judging by past reports, it’s likely Momoa is referring to the untitled buddy cop action comedy movie he’s making with fellow big screen superhero Dave Bautista.
In November, reports emerged that MGM had come out as the winning studio in a bidding war for the untitled action comedy. While few details are known about the film, it seems likely the rush for it was based on Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista’s combined star power alone. Of the few details that have surfaced about the film, Deadline reported it was expected to start filming next year in Hawaii.
Though both Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista appeared in last year’s Dune, they didn’t have any scenes together and apparently didn’t get to know each other very well during the making of that film. Instead, it was during production of the post-apocalyptic Apple TV+ series See that the pair became pals who regularly text each other. Momoa leads the series as Baba Voss and the second season introduced Bautista as Baba’s estranged and vengeful brother Edo. Bautista started the bidding war over the untitled buddy cop flick with an August 2021 tweet, and the rest is… well not history, but hopefully a fun movie we can all look forward to.
